OBLIVION

Oblivion has been hugely influenced by current social and political issues, such as climate change and conflict.

JAZZ’N’MORE

The 24 year old London Trumpeter has recorded a very special concept album with his quintet. Divided into 22 mostly shorter tracks, the album unfolds its effect only it’s entirety. Martin’s aim is to comment musically on the - social, political, philosophical- questions of the present. To do this, similar to the cover by the culturally critical artist AT Wilkinson, he has created a multi-layered college in which everyone can identify. Martin was inspired by the history of Jazz, as well as Rock and Pop. Luckily, this didn’t result in a random mix of styles on ‘Oblivion’. The trumpeter’s style remains traditionally ‘Jazzy’, with some sporadic excursions into freer and more experimental realms. As a result, the orientation remains fixed at a reliable anchor point throughout, and his music actually gives answers instead of asking more questions.

JAZZ THING

The British trumpeter professes to be a fan of David Bowie and Kanye West, but he doesn’t let us hear anything about that on his debut album. Instead, he prefers to go back in time with his quintet to the era of post-bop and, of course, to Miles Davis’ classic mid-sixties formation. And Alistair Martin does this very convincingly, signalling not only an astonishing virtuosity on his instrument, but also as a talent who links history with a contemporary conception.

CONCERTO MAGAZINE

Alistair Martin explores the tonal spectrum of the trumpet with incredible delicacy and intensity, experimenting with structural and dynamic contrasts. Oblivion is based on a ballad-like mood, which is contrasted again and again by sudden tempo changes, sometimes even in the middle of a piece of music, and electronic influences. 22 titles, which could not be more different, are a reflection of the young musician and his band's joy in experimentation and improvisation. From catchy melodies on trumpet and saxophone to a futuristic sound tapestry, Oblivion has it all.
