About

Trumpeter and Composer Alistair Martin has been described as having a “compelling and visionary sound”. The cornerstone of Alistair’s creativity is a love of creating concept albums.

After studying Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music, he released his debut album ‘Oblivion’ in 2021 on Unit Records (Presto Music). Oblivion was hugely influenced by social and political issues, such as climate change and conflict. Musically the album included elements from Hip Hop and Electronic Music, fused with a classic jazz quintet sound. Oblivion was positively reviewed by numerous publications including Jazzthing, Jazz’n’More and Concerto Magazine. The album has now been played more that 250,000 times on Spotify alone.

His upcoming second album ‘MONOMYTH 1K’ is inspired by Joseph Campbell’s book, ‘The Hero with a Thousand Faces’. Alistair's love of film, novels and narrative albums are behind his desire to bring a storyline into improvised music.

As well as releasing music, Alistair also performs regularly as a sideman, including with Tom Smith’s Big Band, Shirley Smart’s Sextet and with Mornington Lockett. In 2023, Alistair was commissioned to write and perform a new work for Big Band by the Royal College of Music Junior Department.

“A remarkable talent as a composer who links history with a contemporary conception. Martin’s tone is expressive, rich and full of melodic invention. Which, given his youthful age speaks to an astonishing maturity as a musician”- Jazzthing
